Star Tribune Announces Slate of Festivities for Return of Minnesota State Fair
• Star Tribune’s Sweet Martha’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Lip Balm
• Giveaways from Mystic Lake Casino Hotel

MINNEAPOLIS – Aug. 4, 2021 / NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DAY – Welcoming the return of the Minnesota State Fair after its one-year COVID-19 hiatus, Star Tribune Media Co., Minnesota’s largest media company, today outlined plans for its 12-day presence at the 2021 Great Minnesota Get-Together.
This year, the highly anticipated Star Tribune lip balm giveaway will feature a flavor that’s been beloved by Minnesotans for more than 40 years: the taste of chocolate chip cookies from Sweet Martha’s Cookie Jar, whose buckets of warm cookies have become a must-have for fairgoers each year. Sweet Martha’s—the fair’s No. 1 vendor—sells around a million cookies each day, and now attendees can have that flavor on their lips well after their buckets are empty. Anticipating record-setting demand from crowds returning to the State Fair after a year’s absence, Star Tribune has doubled its usual supply of free lip balm to hand out to readers and fans who visit its building on Carnes Ave. at the Grandstand ramp.
“In previous years, our lip balm flavor has been a closely guarded secret,” said Steve Yaeger, chief marketing officer and senior vice president of circulation for Star Tribune. “This year, of course, is different. And it’s only fitting that today—National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day—we announce this wonderful partnership with Sweet Martha’s and start the countdown to August 26. See you at the Fair!”

State Fair Deals, Giveaways, and Programming
Throughout the 12 days, Star Tribune will offer its full lineup of merchandise and discount subscription deals. The Star Tribune team will also distribute more than 10,000 prizes as part of a special State Fair Subscriber Rewards Extravaganza. Fairgoers who visit the Star Tribune building will also have an opportunity to win $10,000 in cash from Mystic Lake Casino Hotel.
Star Tribune is also busily assembling its popular programming for the Star Tribune Stage featuring a range of interactive discussions, performances, demonstrations, and interviews with a range of Minnesota personalities from politics, media, sports, and culture. Some confirmed guests include Minnesota Timberwolves Coach Chris Finch; Rod Kaats, the producing artistic director from the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts; Lindsey Whalen, coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers women’s basketball team; and pizza dough acrobat Nick Diesslin. Star Tribune columnist James Lileks will once again anchor three days of his quirky and much-loved “Lip Balm Revue.” And the Trivia Mafia will host “Curious Minnesota Trivia” each day, asking fun questions about the place we call home. More programming will be announced soon.
